the construction industry.
The NAWIC Pledge
As Material for the Construction of
our Building, I Pledge the Agility of my hands,
the Ability of my mind and the Integrity of my
heart.
Brief Overview of NAWIC
Women in Construction was founded
in 1953 in Fort Worth, Texas, by 16 women working
in the construction industry. Knowing at that
time women represented only a small fraction of
the construction industry, the founders organized
to create a support network for each other. Women
in Construction of Fort Worth was so successful
that it gained its National Charter in 1955 and
became the National Association of Women in Construction
(NAWIC).
A video has been produced telling the
story of the beginnings of NAWIC, which is available
nationally to encourage women employed in the construction
industry to realize that a dream can come true.
As women employed in a non-traditional
trade, we have been accepted in our industry
in part to the role our founders played in setting
the groundwork for us.
Fort Worth has been and will continue
to be instrumental in mapping out new roads
for the future of women in construction-not only
as office support staff, but as business owners,
financial experts, marketing directors, project
managers, tradeswomen and field personnel as well.
The organization is composed of
Chapters within Regions. The Fort Worth Chapter
is part of Region 7, which contains 8 chapters in
middle and eastern Texas and Oklahoma bringing membership
to nearly 300. NAWIC also has International Affiliate
Chapters in South Africa, Canada, New Zealand and
Australia.
The founding of the Association
has advanced the causes of all Women in Construction.
